Periodic Tests and Maintenance of Clean Gas Extinguishing Systems - Part 1

Why Do We Use Clean Gas Extinguishing Systems and How Can We Make Sure that They Will Work?

We prefer clean gas automatic fire extinguishing systems primarily for the protection of human-inhabited areas against fire, where there are items and devices that can be damaged due to water with the activation of water extinguishing systems. These systems, which can contain the fire very quickly and leave almost no residues, are commonly used for fire protection today.

You cannot be sure whether it will work if you do not get maintenance done

Fire extinguishing systems are the assurance for preventing loss of life and property that may occur in your building in case of fire. However, even if they have been installed correctly and completely with the equipment that meets the standards, these systems should not create a sense of blind trust. In the course of time, these systems may lose their reliability due to the environmental factors, usage or the characteristics of the components. In such cases, they may fail to fulfill their tasks during the fire, and unexpected loss of life and property may occur.

To eliminate this risk, periodic tests and maintenance of the systems should be conducted regularly. In this way, the malfunctions in the systems are identified and eliminated, and you can make sure that they will work properly in case of fire.

Regulations and mandatory standards serve as a guide

In accordance with the Turkish Fire Protection Regulation, it is the property owner's responsibility and obligation to get the extinguishing systems in buildings tested and maintained under the national standards. In our country, these works are conducted according to the applicable TS EN 15004-1 and TSE CEN/TS 54-14 standards. The TS EN 15004-1 standard includes the maintenance procedures for the mechanical parts of the systems. It contains information about the tests and controls of the amount of extinguishing gas in the cylinders, the pressure and physical conditions of the cylinders, the protected area and the hoses used. The TSE CEN/TS 54-14 standard determines the maintenance procedures of the detection and control system, which operates in integration with the mechanical parts and automatically activates the system in case of fire.

In our next article, we will discuss how to maintain the mechanical parts and how the weight of extinguishing gas, which is one of the most important factors, should be controlled.
